Smile Dog is one of the foundational creepypasta legends of the late-2000s anglophone internet. The story centers on a digital image — known as Smile.jpg — that allegedly causes anyone who views it to suffer nightmares, sleep paralysis, and mental breakdown until they 'spread the word' by passing the image on to others. The framing story is told from the perspective of a writer, 'Mr. L', who interviews victims of the image. The image and its associated lore appear to have first surfaced on 4chan's /x/ (paranormal) board around 2008. The most-cited canonical text was uploaded to the Creepypasta Wiki on August 27, 2010 by Michael Lutz; this version of the story has been the basis for most subsequent retellings. Like Slender Man and other early creepypasta, Smile Dog is studied as a case of digital folklore (Trevor J. Blank, Lynne S. McNeill) and is broadly understood as fiction; no version of the image has ever been independently verified to cause harm.
