Full Account
Slender Man is a fictional supernatural entity that originated as an internet creation on the Something Awful forum 'Create Paranormal Images' Photoshop contest. On June 10, 2009, user Eric Knudsen (forum name 'Victor Surge') posted two black-and-white photographs in which a tall, thin figure in a black suit had been added to images of children, with brief invented witness-account captions. The character rapidly proliferated across the internet, becoming the central figure of an early-2010s wave of collaborative horror fiction known as creepypasta. Slender Man is depicted as unnaturally tall and thin, with a featureless white face, a black suit, and tentacle-like appendages, and is associated with the stalking and abduction of children. Major fictional treatments include the Marble Hornets web series (2009–2014), the video games Slender: The Eight Pages (2012) and Slender: The Arrival (2013), the HBO documentary Beware the Slenderman (2016), and the 2018 feature film Slender Man. The character is widely studied as an example of digital folklore (e.g., Trevor J. Blank, Andrew Peck). A 2014 stabbing in Waukesha, Wisconsin, in which two 12-year-old girls attacked a classmate and cited Slender Man, generated extensive moral-panic coverage and academic analysis.
