Full Account
The Montauk Project is a conspiracy theory that grew out of stories circulating in the early 1980s and was popularised by the book series begun in 1992 by Preston Nichols and Peter Moon (real name Vincent Barbarick). The project is alleged to have taken place at Camp Hero / Montauk Air Force Station, located at Montauk Point, Long Island, New York (approximately 41.0622 N, 71.8739 W). Claims include time travel, teleportation, psychological warfare, mind control programs, contact with extraterrestrials and even alleged involvement in faking the Apollo Moon landings, framed as a continuation of the alleged 'Philadelphia Experiment' of 1943. Nichols and his collaborator Al Bielek claimed they had recovered repressed memories of involvement. The work has been characterised as fiction (UFO researcher Jacques Vallée called the accounts 'highly questionable', and the authors themselves told readers the books could be read 'as science fiction or non-fiction'). No documentary or physical evidence supports the claims. Camp Hero State Park does exist on the site of the former Air Force station and is open to the public; its abandoned radar tower is the most-photographed Montauk Project icon. The conspiracy theory has had significant pop-culture influence, including being the working-title basis for Netflix's Stranger Things (2016-2025) and the subject of the documentary Montauk Chronicles (2015).
