Full Account
Area 51 is a highly classified United States Air Force facility within the Nevada Test and Training Range, approximately 83 mi (134 km) north-northwest of Las Vegas. The base — formally Homey Airport (ICAO: KXTA), surrounding the dry Groom Lake bed — has been used since 1955 for the flight-testing of experimental aircraft and weapons, beginning with the Lockheed U-2 and continuing through the A-12 OXCART, the SR-71 Blackbird, the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter, and the Tacit Blue and Have Blue stealth demonstrators. Foreign aircraft (especially captured Soviet MiGs) have also been evaluated there. The facility's existence was deliberately denied or refused for comment by the U.S. government for decades, and its restricted airspace, deadly-force-authorised perimeter, and secrecy have made it the central setting of UFO and government-cover-up theories: that the U.S. military stores and reverse-engineers crashed extraterrestrial spacecraft, that alien biologics are studied at an underground 'S-4' adjacent to Papoose Lake, and that whistle-blowers such as Bob Lazar have witnessed alien technology there. The CIA officially acknowledged the base in declassified documents released in June 2013.
