Full Account

The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp is a reptilian humanoid cryptid reported in the area of Scape Ore Swamp, near Bishopville in Lee County, South Carolina. The phenomenon coalesced in the summer of 1988 around Christopher Davis, then aged 17, who told the Lee County Sheriff's Office he had been attacked by a roughly 7-foot-tall green creature with three fingers, red eyes, lizard-like skin and snakelike scales while changing a tire on a road bordering the swamp. Davis's account, the discovery of vehicle damage and three-toed footprints, and saturation reporting in regional and then national press triggered a flap of further reports across July and August 1988. A radio station in Columbia offered a $1 million reward for the creature's live capture; the reward was never claimed. On 5 August 1988 a Shaw Air Force Base airman, Kenneth Orr, filed a report claiming to have shot and wounded the creature; he recanted on 7 August, admitting he had fabricated the encounter to avoid charges over an unlawful pistol and a false police report. Sheriff Liston Truesdale led the investigation and at times speculated that an aggressive bear might explain the reports. Skeptical investigator Benjamin Radford has analysed the case in Skeptical Inquirer and elsewhere, arguing that Davis's account shifted significantly between tellings and that an alternative — confrontation with local farmer Lucious Elmore guarding a butterbean shed — fits the physical evidence better. Sightings have continued only sporadically since 1988, with a 2008 vehicle-damage report (blood matching a domestic dog) and 2015 photographs and video of disputed provenance. The phenomenon is now central to Bishopville's regional identity, with a 'Friends of the Lizard Man' civic committee formed in 2019.
