Full Account
The reptilian conspiracy theory is a modern conspiracy belief, popularised by the British conspiracy author David Icke, that the world is secretly ruled by a hidden elite of shape-shifting reptilian humanoids — sometimes said to originate from the Alpha Draconis star system — who occupy positions of high power including monarchies, banking dynasties, and political offices. The theory in its current form coalesces in Icke's 1999 book The Biggest Secret, drawing on earlier pulp-fiction reptilian motifs (Robert E. Howard's 1929 'The Shadow Kingdom'), Theosophical 'Lemurian' speculation in Helena Blavatsky's The Secret Doctrine (1888), and the UFO-contact and Anunnaki literatures of the 1980s and 1990s. Scholars including Michael Barkun and Edward Guimont have documented its incorporation of older antisemitic conspiracy tropes, particularly motifs from the fabricated Protocols of the Elders of Zion. A 2013 Public Policy Polling survey found that approximately 4% of registered American voters expressed agreement with reptilian-rule ideas; the theory is widely considered a textbook example of modern internet-era conspiracism.

Etymology
- Origin:
- Modern English coinage drawing on Latin reptilis ('crawling, creeping'), via the herpetological term 'reptile' applied to alleged humanoid beings.
- Meaning:
- 'Reptilian' = of, or resembling, a reptile; here referring to alleged humanoid lizard-like beings.
- First Use:
- Reptilian humanoids appear in Robert E. Howard's pulp story 'The Shadow Kingdom' (Weird Tales, August 1929). The modern conspiracy framing is associated with David Icke from the mid-1990s, particularly The Biggest Secret (1999).
