Full Account
The Van Meter Visitor refers to a series of creature sightings in the small town of Van Meter, Iowa (population approximately 800 in 1903) over five consecutive nights beginning September 29, 1903. The accounts were reported by multiple respected community members — including a local businessman (Ulysses G. Griffith), a bank cashier (Clarence Dunn), and other identified townspeople — who independently described an identical creature: a large, winged, dark-colored being with a distinctive horn or projection on its forehead that emitted a bright, powerful beam of light described as 'as bright as an electric headlight.' The creature also reportedly emitted a powerful offensive odor. Witnesses who fired at the creature reported that their shots had no apparent effect. The encounters escalated over five nights, with multiple groups of townspeople confronting the creature. The climactic encounter occurred at an abandoned coal mine shaft on the outskirts of town, where the creature (and reportedly a second specimen) disappeared into the mine and was not seen again. Three-toed footprints found near the mine were documented and apparently cast in plaster. The 1903 sightings were covered by contemporary Iowa newspapers including the Des Moines Daily News, providing documentary evidence of the immediate reporting. The case was largely forgotten until the early 21st century when researchers — notably Chad Lewis, Noah Voss, and Kevin Lee Nelson — rediscovered the original newspaper accounts and published them (The Van Meter Visitor, 2013). Van Meter now celebrates its cryptid heritage with an annual festival.
