Full Account
The Orang Gadang ('large person' in Malay/Indonesian) is a giant humanoid cryptid reported from the forests of Sumatra, particularly the Rokan area of Riau province. Local reports describe a bipedal creature 7.5–12 feet (approximately 2.3–3.7 meters) tall, covered in dark hair. In contrast to the much smaller orang-pendek (a separate Sumatran cryptid standing under 1.5 meters), the Orang Gadang is a genuinely giant figure. Footprints attributed to the creature have been found in the Rokan area, described as approximately 2 feet (61 cm) long and 8 inches (20 cm) wide with an unusually large big toe. Behavioral reports describe the creature as shy, nocturnal, and omnivorous — exploring campsites after dark, leaving behind large humanoid footprints, emitting unusual whistling sounds, and hurling stones from concealed positions. A possible historical reference appears in the 1375 Catalan Atlas of Abraham Cresques, which described burly men in the mountains of Sumatra twelve cubits (approximately 5.5 meters / 18 feet) in height, like giants. No specimen, photograph, or verified physical evidence has been confirmed. The Orang Gadang is distinct from and much larger than the orang-pendek.
